Sunday Sermon at Grateful Church (UPCI) in Phoenix

The Anointing - Published

1 Sam 10:1-12

1Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

2 When thou art departed from me today, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulcher in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found …

3 Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:

4 And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.

5 After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tablet, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:

6 And the Spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.

9 And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.

10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

11 And it came to pass when all that knew him before time saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?

The anointing is:

  1. It is a sudden elevation and the transfer of providence, revelation, guidance, power, insight, and love by the Holy Ghost at the point of entry to our mission

  2. It is a sign of a higher calling and to be used at that level, we must be transformed into another man by God – Zech 4:6

  3. Where the bad guys are soon found in good company and foul mouths now speak good news.

  4. The anointing must own itself in subjection to God and His word

Context: The journey of a farm boy to the throne of a new dynasty in Israel. The path that his destiny led him through the tomb, Oak of tabor, Hills of Gibeah was to confirm his calling and mission, for his family, and nation to accept him as their king. At the Hill of Gibeah, Saul was broken (His will – the way he processes information and His attitude - approach to life) and transformed into another man

We are broken to be emptied: Like Mary’s box of alabaster oil of ointment. The aroma of the perfumes filled the presence of God. We are broken:

  1. Culturally to change the way we think: This is a generation that trusted in what they thought to be right in their own sight than on God’s word. They trusted their emotions more than the word of God

    1. Saul inferiority complex, the feelings of not good enough, or inadequacies was a cultural thing

Judg 21:25: In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

Judg 2:10 … and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.

  1. We are broken to destroy the cycle of sin that results in feelings of inadequacies or not been good enough in life

  2. Behaviorally to change the way we act: To conform to the Image of Christ – Rom 8:28. The image of Christ is a new man change with the heart of flesh – Eze 36:26-27

    1. Saul still behaved like a farm boy, preoccupied with his father’s lost donkeys and not by the thrown of Israel – a slave to his past

    2. The change is to be under another dominion, a shift in mindset to enlarge his influence and capacity as a king with boldness and courage – Act 1:8. A king cannot be a slave to anyone

We are regenerated, justified, and glorified in broken places: The glory of the Oaktree is in the broken places of an acorn seed. We are revived to understand how

  1. Riches are found in our poverty, beauty in our ashes

  2. Strength in our weaknesses; good in our bad experiences, and

  3. Live in our broken places - Help in his struggles Rom 8:26; Rom 8:13

So that when I am weak, I am strong – Rom 8:26 – b/c the Holy Spirit helps in my weakness
