Sunday Sermon: Stirred-Up, October 11, 2020

Sunday Sermon at the Grateful (UPCI) Church in Phoenix

Stirred-Up

We are stirred on in the inside by knowledge of God’s word and work in history unto revelation of His plans for our live to fulfill His purpose

Job 6:4 For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit…)

Jere 29: 10-11

For thus saith the Lord, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place. 11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

To be stirred is to kindle our passion afresh and in full flame to bring God’s plan into focus. (Eph 5:17 Wherefore be ye not unwise but understanding what the will of the Lord is).

So, be stirred up in the spirit of God’s might (2 Tim 1:6-7) by knowledge, revelation, and determination

Judg 6:11-15

11 And there came an angel of the Lord, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abi-ezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

12 And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him, and said unto him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

13 And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the Lord be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt? but now the Lord hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.

14 And the Lord looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?

15 And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.

Stirred by Knowledge of Him

It is a blessing when we are stirred to distress, discouragement, or discontent about our situation by the knowledge of God and the awareness of His works in history or in our lives. To be stir up is often disorienting and tiresome, desiring to live differently or discover ourselves and strength

Jer 20:9 … But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.

Isa 55:11 - So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

Stirred through Revelation of His purpose

The Lord has moved to do by us more than we could ever think, dream, or imagined and to transform us from death to a life of joy, peace, fulfillment, and significance

  1. God stirs our hearts to advance His mission on earth, to understand the mission and our part in it, and to bring what is important into focus about a need

  2. Looking upon us with the strength of His Spirit or gift that is unused and untapped, revealing His strength in nuggets or gradual patterns

  3. Examples: Daniel and King Cyprus the Great: Cyprus recognized it was God who stirred him up on the inside to proclaim freedom to all the Jews in his kingdom. He knew how God was going to use him

Ezra 1:2-6

2 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The Lord God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

3 Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the Lord God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.

4 And whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the freewill offering for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.

5 Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all them whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem.

6 And all they that were about them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, and with beasts, and with precious things, beside all that was willingly offered.

Stirred by the Strength of determination

(Jgs 6:14 – You can do it, you have what it takes). Nothing change until we are discontent with our situation. Discontentment drives change to bring God’s purpose in focus. Example:

  1. Ezra, Nehemiah, Zerubbabel, Joshua, the prophets, and the people are all people God stirred up their spirit to build, to bring about change, fulfill His plans, and His purpose

Neh 2:12 - And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem …

Neh 4:6 - So built we the wall; … for the people had a mind to work.

Hag 1:14 - And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the Lord of hosts, their God,

  1. Other good examples are Esther and Mordecai
