Sunday Sermon: God Wants To Give Us A Breakthrough In Crisis, June 28, 2020

We may find ourselves at crossroads at some point in life, tied up without clear direction on what to do. How to overcome the dissenting voices that challenge our faith in God is the premise of David experiences with the Philistines. David wrote in Psalm 3:1-3; Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me. 2 Many there be which say of my soul, there is no help for him in God. 3 But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. David expressed in 2 Sam 5:17-25 the sentiments that.

  1. There are values in waiting for God’s time when at a crossroad

  2. The inner workings of the Holy Spirit have peculiar sounds

  3. Breakthrough occurs when our faith is stirred-up for unusual actions

Reading from the text:

2 Sam 5:17-25

17 But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it and went down to the hold.

18 The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

19 And David inquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the Lord said unto David, go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.

20 And David came to Baal-perazim, and David smote them there, and said, The Lord hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore, he called the name of that place Baal-perazim.

21 And there they left their images, and David and his men burned them.

22 And the Philistines came up yet again and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

23 And when David inquired of the Lord, he said, thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.

24 And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the Lord go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.

25 And David did so, as the Lord had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer.

There are values in waiting for God’s time and season

David waited for God to commission and order his steps in his struggles, acknowledged his dependence on God for victory, and referred his cause to the good pleasure of God. His experiences suggest that:

  1. We should not speculate on what to do or do the first thing that comes easily to hand in our crisis. Yesterday guidance to victory is not enough for today’s problem

  2. We are stronger, braver, and develop clear thinking when we wait for guidance. Waiting on God helps to restrain us from many things we may attempt to venture into in challenging times.

  3. Like David and the apostles, we should wait until we receive guidance from the Holy Spirit before attacking the kingdom of devils, evil systemics structure, or spiritual wickedness in our struggles -Act 2:2.

The inner workings of the Holy Spirit have peculiar sounds

Like the bird announcing sunrise in the morning, and the rushing mighty wind that announced the outpour of the Holy Ghost, so peculiar is the sound of a going over the tree that announced the providence of grace. These mysterious sounds strike at the heart to:

  1. Assign times and seasons for unusual action, to follow where God leads, and to intimidate the enemy - Lev. 26:36

  2. Established our faith on what we hear as opposed to what we see. David followed God without seeing Him

  3. Reveal that God is the master of breakthroughs (Baal-perazim) in tough times. He descends on the enemies like a sudden rainstorm to sweep them away

A breakthrough occurs when our faith is stirred-up for unusual actions

Salvation, conversion, and breakthroughs belong to God and they occur in His time and season – where opportunities for freedom and success meet our willingness for unusual action - 2 Corint 6:2.

  1. Noah took the swelling tides at the flood and the mysterious rain came to secure salvation for his family in the ark - Jesus

  2. The Holy Spirit is announcing the sunrise of your morning with a still voice of convictions to act on God’s promises and achieve a breakthrough.

  3. God will give you a breakthrough if you can act on the peculiar and mysterious sound of His calling
